Gouache is a historical painting medium used in various forms dating back to ancient Egypt. The paint we know and use today became wildly popular during the 19th century and was often used with pastels and pencils in mixed media format.

Gouache is similar to watercolor but has been modified to be opaque. This allows artists to build layers similar to oil but leaves a chalky matte finish.
