DRAWING THE SKULL: JAMES SONDOW
JULY 2nd – JULY 23rd
Students will draw the skull from multiple view-points using images of plaster casts of a real skull with light designed to clarify crucial plane breaks. We will focus on the structural planes that unify, simplify, and create compositional rhythm to this complex form that lies just below the skin and so is paramount in properly rendering the human head.
Reference drawings of the skull drawn at different stages will also be provided to better understand the compositional focal points the anatomy lends itself to both in the skull and by extension in the portrait. During each 5-hour class the professor will give specific one-on-one ongoing verbal and visual critiques by drawing anatomical schematics on images of the students’ work in progress and comparing them to the master work.
Students can use these personalized guides until they are ready for more feedback. (Those who are taking the sculpture class in tandem will have the added bonus of being able to draw the profile of the skull from the half skull provided.)
