Plein Air Portrait Painting: Aleksandr (Sasha) Budayev

TUESDAYS – 7/7 – 7/28

10:30am – 4:00pm

Painting outdoors is a key in understanding color and the matter of paint. During class indoors, students are learning to sculpt the form and the subject’s surroundings in paint, but color remains a formal element. En-plein-air they can focus on the exploration of color and value in its natural environment. Shapes transform, losing their density and clarity due to beams of sunlight disguising the model’s face. Object and landscape merge to create patterns and ultimately lead to the discovery of new expressions. The meaning of portraiture in the traditional sense is reexamined.

During this extremely rare workshop, participants will explore a variety of approaches and techniques of painting quick sketches from life. Each day, the location and set up will change to cover the many juxtapositions and interactions of the face and surrounding natural environment. The instructor will paint along with the students to demonstrate the discussed approaches and make short critiques and corrections at the break. At the end of each session there will be a group critique.

Day 1:

Participants will spend time exploring the basic properties of the face and landscape without getting into detail. There will be 2-4 short portrait studies practicing the fast alla-prima approach. Students will examine the shapes and colors most noticeable as opposed to the slowly calculated in-class observation.

Day 2:

Large scale head. Students will focus on facial features and will explore how this approach changes the way that they perceive portraiture. We will paint the face relatively simple in terms of its shape juxtaposed to  the clear landscape background.

Day 3:

Portrait in a hat and white clothing. Students will explore a relatively complex situation of the face partially covered with the shadow. Additionally they would be able to study palette knife technique applied to realistic painting approaches.

Day 4:

Portrait in action. Students will have a chance to paint the models face in an uncommon tilt and point of view. We will explore unusual composition and color relationships.
