SCULPTING THE SKULL: JAMES SONDOW
JULY 3rd – JULY 24th
Live Zoom Meetings & Student Portal Access
Students will purchase a hand-casted half-skull from a mold of a real male specimen complete with planar demarcations drawn on by the professor along with the rest of the Sondow sculpting kit.
Using this reference along with multiple images of idealized plaster skulls and live demonstrations, students will sculpt the other half of the skull focusing on the symmetric points across the middle line that when grouped into lines delineate major plane breaks, all of which are vital in properly conceiving of and rendering the human head.
Each session will begin with an in-depth slide lecture discussing individual bones of the skull and their importance in creating the architectural planes the surface details of the face and cranium are built upon.
During each 6-hour class the professor will give specific one-on- one ongoing verbal and visual critiques by drawing anatomical schematics on images of the students’ sculptures from various angles and comparing them to the master works provided.
Students can use these personalized guides until they are ready for more feedback. Students will use oil clay (plasticine) which will not harden, dry, or create any dust, and so can be worked easily at the students’ convenience, both in and outside of class without the need of spraying or wrapping.
**SUPPLIES NOT INCLUDED. PLEASE PURCHASE THE KIT BELOW SEPARATELY**
If you are a new student, please purchase the kit for new students. Returning students will have a kit with different supplies as they have already collected most.
