Summer Plein Air Landscape Workshops

Plein Air Figure Painting (Clothed) – Aleksandr (Sasha) Budayev

Thursdays 7/8 – 7/29

2:00pm – 6:00pm

Clothed figure is the intersection of genres of portrait and (nude) figure study. Starting with basic poses we will then move toward more complex gestures and situations. Students are going to get aware of different approaches and techniques in sketching a model from life. We will explore how sunlight, shadow, multiple reflections and uncommon gestures change our understanding of basic properties of the human figure and the very painting.

Day 1:

During the first session participants will explore basic properties of the figure in the natural surrounding. We will avoid getting into the details. For the 5 hours participants will do up to 4 short studies practicing alla-prima approach and examining shapes and color relationships.

Day 2:

Full size portrait in white clothing. Being depicted as a big object juxtaposed to a relatively limited nature view the model’s body becomes a type of portrait. Students will examine the relationships of the body plastique and the character of the model’s face and the very set up. White clothing will help us to focus on the way color and light transform shapes of the body and to realize the inevitable unity in terms of values and color as a result of infinite transitions and reflections en plein air.

Day 3:

Students will paint the model staying far enough from the setup so the model become literally a part of the landscape. Whole there’s no clearly articulated face we will focus on a silhouette and big tonal and color relationships and structure of the sketch’s compositional structure.

Day 4:

The lay or reclined figure. Last day of the workshop participants will spend working on their studies of the model lay down or reclined. This point of view shows unusual shortening of facial and bodily proportions.  The grass and other natural properties makes the model partially blend with the environment. It is also the chance to focus and emphasize the bodily features other than the face as a main object in the picture.

SUPPLY LIST:

Oil or acrylic or casein paints, brushes, solvent (terpenoid for oils, water or acrylic medium for acrylic paints, water for casein paints), canvas pad 9″ by 12″, stretched and primed canvases about 16″ by 20″ to 20″ by 24″, rags, oil can or water can, palette (classic plywood soaked in boiled linseed oil for oils or white plastic or enameled for acrylic and casein paints), foldable chair and easel or plein-air box.

Plein Air Still Life Painting – Aleksandr (Sasha) Budayev

Thursdays 8/5 – 8/26

2:00pm- 6:00pm

Not only do both the figure or the portrait change dramatically when being moved outdoors, but still life as well. Surprisingly, still life en-plein-air is actually one of the most exciting outdoor painting experiences. Every branch, rock or blade of grass can appear as a motif for still-life. This significantly broadens our understanding of what still life can mean.

Students will switch the monotonous yet extremely important paradigm of in-class academic painting for extremely different methods.

Instead of ellipses, accurate shadows and straight lines, plein-air painting pursues materiality, subtleness of color/tonal transitions and uncommon compositions. Depth is explored by assessing the density of an object as well as  its closeness to the student guiding them to emphasize atmospheric perspective.
